From the web to AI: the turning points that shaped Cédric Goutard's career

Changing fields. Learning new roles. Starting again, more than once. Over 28 years at Orange Innovation, Cédric Goutard has built his career by seizing opportunities as they came along, including some he never imagined he’d pursue.

Today, he leads the team behind Live Intelligence, Orange's generative AI platform, having lived through several major technology shifts along the way: the early days of the web, IP television, and now AI. The thread running through it all? Staying curious, continuing to learn and being willing to step outside his comfort zone.

Turning point #1 - When someone believes in your potential

Cédric joined Orange in the late 1990s, just as the web was starting to transform digital habits. For ten years, he worked on the infrastructure that let the web grow: servers, architecture, quality of service.

"I've had three strokes of luck in my life. Getting to work in three fields right at the start of the wave. And like a surfer, it's a great feeling to be in that position."

None of these shifts happened automatically. At each stage of Cédric's career, a chance encounter played a key role. Each time, a manager recognised transferable skills in his experience.

"I've been lucky, because at every shift between fields, I had managers who believed in me."

Moving from the web to television, and later to artificial intelligence, is also about recognising that some skills go beyond any one role or technology.

Turning point #2 - Changing fields without starting from scratch

In 2008, Cédric joined the teams working on Orange's television business. New ground, but with skills he could carry over.

"There are technical skills, but also soft skills, that mean moving from the web to TV isn't such a big leap. And my manager saw that."

What allowed him to move forward wasn't just what he already knew. It was also his ability to learn and to connect different experiences. A few years later, another change came along: artificial intelligence.

"Orange lets you change roles over the course of your career. And you can change fields too. So with the same job title, you can end up working on very different things. I've worked across three different fields: the web, Orange's TV business and now AI."

Turning point #3 - Taking on a role he'd never pictured for himself

The biggest shift in his career may not be a technological one, but a personal one. For a long time, Cédric didn't see himself as a manager.

"Before it was ever suggested to me, I'd have said: management, never. No way. That's just not something I want to do."

Then someone suggested he give it a try. That trust changed the course of his career.

"I was offered the role, with a few good reasons behind it, and reassurance that if it didn't work out, I could always go back."

In the end, he discovered a new role and built a dual skill set that still shapes his day-to-day work.

"I've enjoyed this role since becoming a manager, but I still enjoy the product and technical side too. So since then, I've often ended up doing both."

Turning point #4 - Becoming a beginner again to keep moving forward

Changing roles sometimes means accepting that you no longer know it all. For Cédric, that was especially true when he became a manager.

"We're lucky to have really good training programmes. It's not about figuring it all out on your own; we're genuinely well supported."

For him, working in tech means accepting that things are always changing.

"You have to be willing to feel a bit off balance, and that's no bad thing. And on top of that, we're in a large company where taking risks is very well protected."

Even today, he keeps that curiosity alive through conversations with colleagues and by keeping up with new technology.

"I try to spend time keeping an eye on the market and doing some external research. I talk a lot with my colleagues, and I'm always open to a discussion."

Turning point #5 - Turning an internal innovation into a customer solution

With Live Intelligence, Cédric is helping take the project one step further: turning a solution built for Orange's own employees and turning it into a solution for Orange Business customers.

"The idea is to build a single product, roll it out first for internal needs, then adapt it as little as possible for Orange Business customers."

The journey started with internal use, before taking on a new dimension.

"The product was working really well internally. So at Orange Innovation and Orange Business, we thought it had real potential for Orange Business customers too."

Always learning something new

After 28 years at Orange, Cédric doesn't talk about a fixed career path. He talks about a journey built through stages, encounters and opportunities. What's never changed is the drive to keep moving forward.

"It comes down to wanting to enjoy what you do. I'm not here to make life hard for myself; I take things with a bit of philosophy, and we all do our best."

A philosophy that sums up his career: stay curious, embrace change, and keep exploring new territory.
